Joshua 15:18-19 (ESV): 18 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” 19 She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have given me the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
When Othniel was given Acsah as his wife, she boldly convinced him to ask her father, Caleb, for a piece of his land. Caleb granted this to them. However, Achsah knew that this land could not survive without water, so she went back to her father and asked for a spring. Caleb gave this to her as well, because he wanted his daughter to succeed.
When I first read this story about Achsah’s request, my initial reaction was to think of her as selfish for asking more from Caleb right after he had just given her land. But I think God would like us to learn from Achsah’s boldness.
Achsah knew that she couldn’t manage the blessing she was given without asking her father for more support, so she confidently did that. And her father had what she needed, so he gladly gave all that she needed to make her original blessing survive and flourish. In the same way, we should be confident in going to our Father and asking what else He has for us.
John 4:13-14 (ESV): 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
So, next time you receive a blessing from God, ask for the spring. Ask God for the double portion. It’s not a selfish thing to do, but rather it’s a way to allow God to show you what else you need in order to use that blessing in the way He intended you to. It’s a way to acknowledge your need for Him and your desire for what else He has for you, even after receiving a blessing. God will always have more for you and He will always gladly give you what you need. Just as a spring is a constant source of water for those that go to it, God is a constant source of goodness and blessings for those that continue to seek what He has for them. Keep asking and seeking, no matter what position you’re in.
Luke 11:9 (NLT): 9 “And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
