Psalm 25:14 (ESV) “ The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear HIM, and HE makes known to them HIS covenant.“
With friends you reveal things that you wouldn’t to others. At the beginning of this scripture it says “The friendship of the LORD” but this can also be interpreted as “The secret counsel of the LORD”. So it is saying here that the Lord confides in those who fear HIM. HE speaks to them because they are HIS friend.
Maybe you have been wondering if you can hear the Lord. Maybe you have heard HIM speak to you in the past but you haven’t heard HIM lately but you want to again. Maybe you have thought of all the reasons why that is. Whatever you have thought about it know this, that the Lord wants to speak to you. HE wants to speak to you and for you to hear HIS voice. That should be a comforting thought to all of us. Not only does HE want to speak to you; He made a way for us to hear HIM through Jesus. Psalm 25:14 reminds me of a scripture that my friend Ken shared with us many times as he encouraged us in a relationship with Jesus. He would remind us that Jesus calls us friend.
John 15:13-15 (ESV) “13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”
Jesus is speaking to believers here. HE is speaking to HIS closest disciples and HE is speaking to you and me. We see a greater love that is willing to die to make a way for us to know HIM as friend. No longer servants but friends that HE reveals all to. HE wants us to know that HE calls us friend and HE wants to speak the secret counsel that HE has between HIM and the Father.
So are you hearing the Lord today? Maybe the answer is “yes” or maybe it’s “no”. Either way HE wants you to know today that HE desires to speak to you and for you to hear HIS heart. That truth alone should humble us and fill us with awe. King Jesus, who conquered, the grave wants to speak to us and welcomes us as intimate friends.
If you long to hear the Lord, let that be where you begin today. Come before HIM in prayer acknowledging that truth, “Thank you Lord that you want to speak to me today.” HE speaks to us through the Holy Spirit and through HIS Word. HE may impress a word on your heart, give you a picture, or even visions and dreams. If you ever wonder if it is the Lord speaking, then a simple test is does it line up with Scripture?
Let’s not be afraid that HE might not speak to us, but let’s live in the fear of the Lord. It is a healthy fear that does not produce terror or dread but instead humility and wonder. It drives out lesser fears and it is the beginning of wisdom. And somehow, according to Psalm 25:14, it leads to friendship with the Lord.
