I was scanning the horizon for my loved one in the hubbub of deboarding passengers. Quick checks and flicks of the eyes – not their height, not their shape…Maybe? No, not their hair or their walk…then YES! No running or shouting, just the sweet satisfied smile of connection and hearts at rest – a warm embrace – we were both at home again.
We probably have all felt this, at least on a small scale – a parent coming home from work, reuniting with an old friend, returning home after a trip, but have you ever really longed for someone to return to you?
When you know and love someone, you miss them when they are gone, and when they are about to arrive you love looking for them. You love looking because you don’t want to miss a moment – and when they finally appear, you recognize them from their smallest tendencies and particular features. When you’re finally reunited, you feel more complete and more yourself. Sure, in their absence, you may have talked to them on the phone, written them letters, or had video calls – but nothing was better than having them right next to you. Maybe you held your breath waiting for them, maybe you still are, but when things are all right in the world, you feel a sigh of relief and release.
I think the Christian walk is a bit like all of this, so I ask myself – am I longing to see the Lord’s appearing?2 Timothy 4:7-8
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
By His grace and kindness, we go throughout our day – our tethered to abundance, well lit day – living out each moment in practicality but simultaneously we can be looking and longing for His appearing.
Psalm 24:7
Lift up your heads, you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Hebrews 10:23-25
23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Brothers and sisters, look up! Scan the horizon for His moves, His people, His gaze – all the more as we earnestly desire and await His return and see the Day approaching. –Sara Smith
