Man, it’s dark. This is a kind of dark I have never experienced. The kind that makes you not just hold your hand in front of your face, but actually touch your nose with it to convince yourself that it is still there. As I stand in Craighead Caverns as a thirteen-year-old, in a room full of students who have been standing silent in the dark for what seemed like ages, I hear the scrape of rough meeting rough. Then, an explosion of light! One small match meets the wick of a lantern, and miraculously a cave is filled with light.

I remember in that moment as the light grew, the fear in the room fled. Nerves turned to laughter, to oohs and aahs, and in that moment we had a greater appreciation for light in dark places.

In John 1:4, It says about the Word; “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Furthermore, John goes on to tell us in chapter 3:20-21 that those who do evil hate the light and won’t come into it because of fear, but “whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”

It’s a good reminder for me that living in fear leads us away from light, but living in truth draws us toward it. When things are unclear or hard to see, check to see if fear is present. And if you are living in fear in an area of your life, God invites us to shine the light of his word into that place. His word lights our path (Ps. 119:105), so we can ask God to show us the truth about our situation. We can choose to live our lives by hearing and believing the truth that proceeds from the mouth of The Truth. If you find yourself in fear, then let the truth of God set you free.

Praise God that the darkness can never overcome the light! Lord let your light shine upon us this week!  –Ryan Cameron
